Best Antelope Hunting

Eastern Montana offers some of the best antelope and plains deer hunting in the Big Sky State. Approximately 45 percent of the state's antelope harvest and a third of the deer taken come from this area alone.

Mostly prairie country, southeast Montana offers excellent hunting for both mulies (occurring on 94 percent of the region's land area) and whitetails (found on over 36 percent of the land area). Region 7 encompasses 13 counties - Big Horn, Carter, Custer, Dawson, Fallon, Garfield, McCone, Powder River, Prairie, Richland, Rosebud, Treasure and Wibaux - all names that trigger the imaginations of those familiar with Montana hunting. It stretches from the very southeastern corner of the state up the Missouri River and Fort Peck Lake in the northeastern quadrant.

This entire area is called Region 7 under the Block Management Program of the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks. And while there is some public land in the area, approximately 75 percent of it is privately owned, primarily as ranch lands.
